Applications for the Irish Shooting Academy

   15 Apr 2022

Closing 24th April 2022. Download the application form here.

Irish Shooting Academy2 (ISA)

‘The Academy’ is an integral and important part of the ICTSA Olympic Pathway. This is the second iteration of a project which Jeffrey McCready started back in 2015 when he previously held the role of High Performance Director & Head Coach.

Traditionally, in Ireland, the Olympic disciplines have yielded less interest from the membership. Whilst we understand the level of challenge they present, in contrast, the Olympic disciplines offer the opportunity to represent Ireland on a global sporting stage, culminating in the biggest sporting event of them all, the Olympic Games. That’s an honour Irelands Derek Burnett has achieved 5 times, Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008, London 2012 & Tokyo2020. This makes Derek one of only 3 Irish athletes to compete at 5 Olympic Games. That’s a huge honour for Derek personally and of course, for the sport of clay target shooting in Ireland.

If you enjoy your sport and are seeking a new challenge, then the Academy is the place to start. Qualified ISSF coaches will guide you to develop your shooting and competition skills. This will also include physical training and sports psychology programs.  After each training day, you will leave with a clear plan of what to practice between then and the next training day.

This could be the start of a rewarding journey and who knows, with hard work and dedication, you might one day achieve the goal of representing Ireland at a future Olympic Games! There’s an old Chinese proverb which says, “the best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago, the next best time is today”. So, it’s never too late to seek a change of direction.

Please give some serious thought on what you want to achieve from the sport of clay target shooting. A maximum of 12 places are available in each discipline, Olympic Skeet and Olympic Trap.

Applications are open to all members who wish to compete internationally for Ireland at ISSF level. We would especially welcome those from Junior and Lady shooters. As this is a ‘development’ program, with ISSF qualified coaches, those members of ISA who qualify to represent Ireland at the annual Home Countries International Tournament in OSK or OT will be expected to take up that Team place.

If you would like to apply for an Academy place, please do so on the attached ‘initial assessment’ form and return to Jeffrey McCready at claytargetcoach@gmail.com

Closing date for applications is 24th April 2022.
