ISSF World Cup, Lonato Round-up

   23 Apr 2022

from HP Director Jeffrey McCready

The ISSF World Rankings have already been updated after the Trap competition finished yesterday at the World Cup in Lonato, Italy. Ireland’s Aoife Gormally finished tied for 16th place in Lonato (78 entries), moving her up the World Rankings from 24th to 18th. Aoife is the only Irish athlete, pistol, rifle or shotgun currently in the World Ranking lists.

Jeffrey McCready, High Performance Director reports;

“As there always is after an ISSF competition, lots to reflect and review from Lonato. Aesthetically perfect, It’s actually a really tough place to shoot. Aoife is moving forward in the ranking lists. Olympic qualification is a marathon, not a sprint, and ‘peaking’ later in the year for the European & World Championships is the plan. In the Men’s event the 3 athletes can each learn lots from this competition, and go forward for the rest of the season. In particular I want to pay tribute to Dan (McLoughlin) and Jonathon (O’Neill) for challenging themselves and stepping up to ISSF level for their first Irish cap. It’s a huge Rubicon to cross and they will both learn bucketfuls from this.

Can I also take this opportunity to congratulate Kirsty Hegarty (GBR) on winning Gold in the Women’s comp. Its a fantastic achievement at this level.

It’s now eyes down for Team Ireland, working towards the next World Cup in Baku, Azerbaijan at the end of May.”
